Overview

To help incentivize EV adoption, there is a federal tax credit (called the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit) for installing charging infrastructure in certain locations around the country. For homeowners, the credit is 30% of the equipment and installation costs, up to $1,000 per charging port.

Why install charging?

Eligibility

The charger must be installed in a qualifying census tract. Use this list from the IRS to determine whether your census tract qualifies. This tax credit is “nonrefundable,” meaning you must have enough tax liability to offset the credit.

How to Redeem

  • First, confirm that you're eligible by reviewing the fine print on the IRS website.
  • Install the charging equipment.
  • Refer to the IRS guidance for instructions on filling out the appropriate tax form(s), potentially consulting a tax professional.
