Overview

To help incentivize EV adoption, there is a federal tax credit (called the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit) for installing charging infrastructure in certain locations around the country. For commercial properties, the credit can cover up to 30% of the equipment and installation costs, up to $100,000 per charging port.

Why install charging?

Eligibility

  • The charger must be installed in a qualifying census tract. Use this list from the IRS to determine whether your census tract qualifies.
  • Businesses can receive a tax credit of 6% of depreciable costs (up to $100,000) or 30% of costs (up to $100,000) if the installation meets U.S. Department of Labor requirements.
  • Tax-exempt entities (nonprofits and municipalities) can receive the same amount as businesses in the form of elective payments rather than tax credits.

How to Redeem

  • First, confirm that you're eligible by reviewing the fine print on the IRS website.
  • Install the charging equipment.
  • Refer to the IRS guidance for instructions on filling out the appropriate tax form(s), potentially consulting a tax professional in the process.
